Nametags - Chris Waddell's Educational ProgramNametags... "Geek, Jock, Skater, Emo, Loser, Cutter, Weirdo, "Class President", "Overachiever", "Underachiever", ... "Geek" How many labels do we wear as kids? How many more are there now in this time of single parents, adopted children, and clinical designations for dyslexia, ADD, ADDHD, etc.? How many ways are there to be separate? How many ways are there to be separate when all we want to do is fit in? Don't we all have obstacles to overcome? As adults we hide those nametags that we wore like "scarlet letters" as children. When Chris Waddell broke his back, which paralyzed him from the waist down, he joined a group that is often forgotten and as a result is more separate than any other. The disabled community is on the fringe more than any other group, and he will wear his nametag, "cripple," for the rest of his life. "Nametags" will address seeing the world from the outside-being forced to the outside, but also looking at the people who've been so successful, from the outside-those who achieved instead of simply fitting in. Chris has been on the outside and wants to be on the inside, but he's also seen kind and generous acts from very unlikely sources. "We won't cure the case of nametags, but we will start a conversation that might last a lifetime." - Chris Waddell Nametags is One-Revolution's educational program. This student outreach sparks a discussion about labels we put on ourselves and each other. Without focusing specifically on physical disabilities, the conversation attempts to shift perspectives so that we choose to see our differences as indications of potential genius as opposed to reasons to separate ourselves from others. Two part presentation: In all, "Nametag" events will be 1 hour long. The intention is that this conversation continues at home, in the workplace and beyond.
